What if I am abroad and unable to present my EHIC?

If you are accessing healthcare at a public health entity you may:

Option 1: Pay for your treatment and when you return to Malta you can present your original receipt and other relevant documents at the Entitlement Unit. The Entitlement Unit will start the process for you to get reimbursed;

OR

Option 2: Request a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC)

  1. A PRC can temporarily replace an EHIC when it is unavailable, expired, lost or cannot be used.
  2. The healthcare provider/hospital abroad (in which you are being treated) should normally request the PRC directly (electronically through EESSI) from the competent institution (i.e. the Entitlement Unit).
  3. The healthcare provider/hospital should provide the necessary information and your admission/discharge dates.
  4. If the healthcare provider/hospital is unable to assist, please contact us on [email protected] / +356 25952400 so we can support accordingly.
