The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) continues to provide valuable support to persons travelling within Europe, giving access to medically necessary healthcare in public healthcare institutions during a temporary stay abroad.
A recent TVM News feature highlighted the importance of the scheme and reported that more than 325,000 residents in Malta currently hold a valid EHIC. The report also noted that 1,540 persons used the card to access urgent healthcare services in public hospitals across Europe during 2025.
The Entitlement Unit encourages travellers to ensure that their EHIC remains valid before travelling abroad. Whilst the card provides access to necessary state-provided healthcare, it should not be considered a substitute for travel insurance.
